Roller-Bot I © March 1999 -INSTRUCTIONS USED FOR THE 1999 ENGINEERS WEEK
  • --- Roller-Bot I© Instructions ---
The Roller-Bot I© is a small dumb light activated robot built on a paint roller and can be activated by a flashlight. The project and its design is a fruition of my personal interest(s) in "minimal engineering" and the notion such investigations can inspire related or unrelated ideas in young minds by demonstrating the simplistic application of unusual or unorodox materials in a "minimal" project design.

Roller-Bot I © under normal operation, is activated by an ordinary flashlight and will move in 10-foot diameter circle. I developed the Roller-Bot© for Washington University student chapters of IEEE and Engineers Council as an event / project promoting Engineers Week 1999. As part of the Engineers Week promotion this had students invited to participate in the assembly of the Rollerbot Kits. Students were invited via posters to the assembly venue which was the Gargoyle (campus student union) to claim and assemble the Rollerbot kit. The project was limited to the first 20 students, and the notion of projects that bear the "make-and-take" declaration are inspired by my affiliation with the St. Louis Area Physics Teachers (http://www.slapt.org/) and similar projects developed with the member teachers between 1989 and 1994. Unlike any other project I have developed before, this one requires absolutely NO hand tools after a sufficient preparation of the materials. A photographer from the RECORD (WU campus news) Took the following Photo of students building Roller Bots at Engineers Week. Regards, Paul Discher

Roller-Bot II© August 20 1999 -INSTRUCTIONS USED FOR EE OPEN HOUSE
  • --- Roller-Bot II© Instructions ---
The Roller-Bot II© is a revision of the original Roller-Bot© of March 1999. In this revision I moved the drive line of the rubber band and motor to the right side of the paint roller lining up with the mechanical support of the paint roller handle. This change prevents the deformation of the paint roller, which caused the unit to circle in a 10 foot radius. (originally listed as a feature). This "make-and-take" project was featured at the Electrical Engineering Department Open House 8/20/99. The first 25 freshman students attending got to build and keep the Bot©. We made and gave away 24 of the 25 units. This was the best attended open house I had ever seen in 10 years. Regards Paul Discher
